What we do
Our Dispensers work from your prescription and take the time with you to explore your options, recommending what best suits your needs. Everyone is different! Depending on your lenses they may also make recommendations regarding your frame choice, from both a practical and an aesthetic point of view. Once you have chosen your frames and lenses they will take a number of highly specific measurements so that they can produce your spectacles and optimise them for you as much as possible.
In-house glazing
We have state-of-the-art glazing machines and keep a bank of coated and uncoated single-vision lenses within a certain range of prescriptions, so we can often glaze your single vision spectacles within the hour. When it comes to more specialised lenses, such as higher prescription or varifocal lenses, these can take a number of weeks to produce. Unlike many Opticians who send your spectacles away to be reglazed, having a laboratory within the premises means we can order your lenses uncut and glaze them here, so we’ll only need to borrow your frame for up to 2 hours.
Rimless capabilities
With rimless frames, the lens itself is drilled into and the sides and bridge of the spectacles are attached. This means the lenses must be made of a special, higher index material, so that they can withstand the pressure of both the drilling and the absence of any protective rim. With no rim however, the possibilities of lens shapes really are endless. Our glazing machines can cut down lenses in all sorts of shapes and sizes, from the traditional to the down-right bizarre. Pop in store to see our rimless sunglasses shaped like Land Rovers!
Repairs and replacements
If your spectacles break, always come in and see us – we have a workshop full of spare components like screws and nosepads that can often get you back in one piece very quickly. Things get a bit trickier when the sides or front of the frame themselves break, but depending on how old they are, we can sometimes get replacement parts from our suppliers, meaning you won’t have to fork out for a whole new frame. Please don’t use super glue on your spectacles! Frames that might have been easily repaired can be left redundant when super glue enters the fine recesses that hold your lenses in place, not to mention if it gets on the lenses. When lenses break or become scratched however, these sadly cannot be fixed as any distortion, removal or addition of material will compromise the prescription, rendering them useless to you.

Spectacles for applying contact lenses or eye make-up
These spectacles are specifically designed so that each eye can be accessed in turn by flipping the lens over, while the vision in the other eye is still corrected with a prescription lens.

Upside-down spectacles
Vince modified these spectacles for a patient with posture issues by turning the front upside-down and fitting nose pads to allow the frame to ride much higher on the bridge of the nose.

Telescopic lens
For a patient who is extremely myopic in one eye, Vince drilled through a lens and mounted a telescope on a pair of spectacles. A sturdy frame and strong metal hinges attaching the sides were essential for this project!
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I have my new prescription put into my existing frame?
Yes! Provided a frame is still structurally sound we’re happy to replace the lenses. We just charge a reglaze fee of £10 to £20 depending on the type of frame, and it normally takes us 1 or 2 hours to do.
Can I have my current lenses put into a different/new frame?
Very rarely will this work for a number of reasons. Your lenses are cut down specifically for your frame but also specific to where the frame sits on your face. If you put your lenses into a different frame, even if they seem to fit, you would likely no longer be looking through the centre of the lens where your prescription is.
Can I take my prescription to have glasses made elsewhere?
Yes, you can take your prescription to another Opticians or bring an outside prescription to us. It is important to note, however, that in taking the prescription elsewhere, the Opticians who dispense the spectacles are responsible for any non-tolerance issues. That means if you have any problem with your spectacles you will need to resolve the issue with the Opticians who supplied them.
I have a set of Irlen® lenses – will you put them into some glasses for me?
Yes! You can bring your Irlen® lenses and your own frame for us to glaze, or you can choose one of our frames to have them put into instead. We just charge a reglaze fee of £10 to £20 depending on the type of frame, and it normally takes us 1 or 2 hours to do.
